Therapeutic Effects of Individualized
Alpha Frequency Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) on the Negative
Symptoms of Schizophrenia
Schizophr Bull, Advance Access published on October
27, 2005
ABSTRACT
Previous research has demonstrated that
reduction of alpha-frequency EEG (8-13 Hz) may have particular relevance
to schizophrenia symptomatology. Repetitive Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation
(rTMS) was utilized to investigate this relationship and assess its efficacy
as a treatment. Twenty-seven patients received two weeks of daily treatment
with either EEG-guided alpha, 3Hz, 20Hz, or sham stimulation bilaterally
over the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex. EEG-guided rTMS demonstrated
a superior therapeutic effect (29.6% reduction in negative symptoms) to
the other three conditions (< 9%), which was highly correlated with
increases (34%) in frontal alpha power.
These results affirm that the resonant features of alpha-frequency EEG
play an important role in the pathophysiology of schizophrenia, and merit
further investigation as a particularly efficacious frequency for rTMS
treatments.
